What's Next with Prop O?

The Bureau of Sanitation, which oversees Prop O projects, is currently conducting an indepth review of the Verdugo Hills Storm Water Project. As you may remember L.A. City Councilmember Paul Krekorian proposed the VHGC for Prop O consideration this past May.

We anticipate the report will be presented to the Citizens Oversight Advisory Committee [COAC] and Administrative Oversight Committee [AOC] at their December or January meetings. If approved by both committees, the AOC will place the project in line for funding, pending resolutions of any special requirements set by the committees, as well as the availability of funds.

At the appropriate time, we will ask members of the community, community organizations, and elected officials to let Councilmember Krekorian, the Bureau of Sanitation, and the Los Angeles City Council know that they support Prop O funding for the Verdugo Hills Storm Water Project. We believe that overwhelming support from the community could help ensure that the Verdugo Hills Golf Course receives Prop O funding and is preserved for future generations.

Calling all Disc Golfers!

Yes, Disc Golfers! Through the end of the year Verdugo Hills Golf Course has installed nine disc baskets on the 18 hole course. Based on usage and feedback, the baskets could be increased to eighteen. Of course, traditional golfers are still welcome!

Earlier this year one of the three day Canon Ball Run Tournament was held at the VHGC. Response from disc golfers was very positive. Another plus for disc golfers: lighted night play, manicured greens, AND Tees on the Green, for great food and beverages, including draft and bottled beers.

Fee: $5
Rental Discs: $2
Hours: 6:30am- 9:30 pm 7 days a week!

One disc golf enthusiast has detailed the ins and outs of playing the VHGC. And the Disc Golf Course Review provides additional lowdown on DG at VHGC.

Haven't tried disc golf? Don't have a disc? You can rent one at the VHGC. Here's a perfect opportunity to give it shot. And as we've noted before, the best way to save the VHGC, is to play it!

Storm Water Runoff and Its Impacts

One of the central concepts of the Verdugo Hills Storm Water Project is capturing and cleaning stormwater runoff. Why is this important?

"Stormwater Runoff 101", a video by the Natural Resources Defense Council [NRDC], looks at the problems created by polluted stormwater, as well as solutions. The video examines some of those methods, including ways in which all of us can help.

Note: If the video box does not appear you can also view it on YouTube.

Managing and improving the quality of stormwater run off is one of the goals of Proposition O and the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation - finding ways to capture, clean, and re-utilize the water after the filtration process.

To find out more about Prop O, its projects and its long range benefits, visit the Proposition O website. You can find out about the criteria for Prop O funding, as well as view some of the projects that were approved for funding, such as Echo Park Lake, Los Angeles Zoo Parking Lot, and the South Los Angeles Wetland Park Project. It's well worth checking out.

Hundreds of Acres of Open Space Preserved

Earlier this month L.A. City Councilmember Paul Krekorian announced the acquisition of 277.5 acres of land adjacent to the Angeles National Golf Course in Lake View Terrace. The land has been officially set aside as recreational open space and will be protected from future development.

According to Krekorian:   “The area surrounding this golf course is among the most scenic open space in all of Los Angeles, and it was imperative to protect it from development. Today, I am thrilled that a 15-year journey has finally come to a successful conclusion thanks to the persistent efforts of so many in the community, the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority [MRCA] and Angeles National, and I am very proud that my office has pushed hard to get this done. Our collective efforts will leave a permanent legacy of environmental protection, recreational enhancements and an improved quality of life in this area.”

Joseph T. Edmiston, Executive Officer of the MRCA stated, “Big Tujunga Wash in and of itself is its own force of nature, an unparalleled capsule of biodiversity “This acquisition will extend the recreational resource value of the Angeles National Forest into the San Fernando Valley.”

V.O.I.C.E. thanks City Councilmember Krekorian, the MRCA, and all of the participants who helped in completing this critical acquisition.
